In this short post, we’ll outline the benefits and disadvantages that come with having water wells. Most people who have water wells are those who live outside city limits. Which includes, but is not limited to, those who own livestock (cows, horses, sheep, etc.), or people who grow plants, food, and flowers (farmers and greenhouse workers).
Making sure you pick the right choice for a water source isn’t always for your benefit alone. If you own animals, or are caring for plants you’ll want to be sure they are also getting safe, healthy water for their nutrition and survival.
Pros of Having a Water Well
- No water bill,
- No waste water bill (as you’ll probably have a septic system too),
- Well water can be higher in nutrients, and minerals, as well as fresher,
- Protected from contamination during natural disasters,
- Potentially endless water supply,
- Properly maintained wells can have long life spans – between 30-50 years,
- Real estate appraisal (higher value if properly maintained),
- Environmental friendly.
Cons of Having a Water Well
- Hard water and scale build up can occur,
- Can contain bacteria, lead and arsenic,
- Pumps may need replacing every 10 years or so,
- Dependent on electricity,
- You’re responsible for the quality and quantity of your water,
- Regular checks are recommended as the well can become contaminated (organisms can be present, and debris & chemicals can fall in and contaminate the well)
- Can have a dissatisfactory taste.
Whether you’re looking at future properties, looking into water wells, or just want to know more information, doing research is the best bet. You have to look at both sides in order to figure out what will work best for you, and your loved ones!
